SAN ANTONIO — Federal authorities are warning consumers not to purchase Viagra, which treats erectile dysfunction (ED) and pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), as the price of prescription drugs such as Cialis and Levitra may be higher than they previously were.
Federal law requires pharmacies to carry a list of drugs with “unfair or deceptive price” when consumers purchase drugs from unregulated sources, the Food and Drug Administration said in a statement Friday.
The FDA also warned consumers not to purchase Cialis or Levitra as the drugs may have different active ingredients or may cause different side effects.
According to the FDA, prescription drugs may have varying dosages and the amount of medication must be taken according to the manufacturer’s recommended dose. Cialis and Levitra are the most commonly prescribed ED drugs.
“Pharmacies often charge for the lowest available price of prescription drugs because they need to offer greater affordability and convenience,” the FDA said. “Consumers can expect their medication to come from a source they trust, whether that source is a pharmacy or another retailer.”
According to the FDA, a drug’s label often provides a list price of “unfair or deceptive price” when consumers purchase the drug from unapproved sources. The list price should not exceed the price the manufacturer charges for the drug.
The agency also issued a safety alert on Cialis, the active ingredient in Viagra, stating that patients should not take the drug if they are taking nitrates, guanylate cyclase stimulators, blood pressure medications, or alpha-blockers. The drug is only available in the United States and is not covered by Medicare, Medicaid, or other federal health care programs.
The FDA said consumers who purchase Cialis from unapproved sources are not taking the drug because the drug has not been approved for sale by a regulatory body.
In the most recent advisory, the agency said the FDA “is not evaluating Cialis for safety and efficacy and does not recommend it for patients with serious heart conditions.”
The FDA also urged consumers to stop using the drug and to inform their healthcare provider if they experience any adverse reactions, the agency said.
In May, the agency warned consumers that the drug may not be suitable for them and that it could lead to a heart attack or stroke. The agency also cautioned that people with heart disease may be at increased risk of cardiovascular events.
The FDA said consumers should seek advice from their health care provider, who will be able to determine if the drug is appropriate for them, as well as other health factors.
“There is no such thing as safe and effective treatment for erectile dysfunction,” the FDA said.
“These warnings are very important and have not been adequately communicated to consumers. Consumers should be informed about the risks associated with the use of prescription drugs,” the FDA said.
The FDA also warned consumers to inform their healthcare providers of any other medications they are taking, the FDA said.
